IF WE HAD WINE WHAT WE WILL BE DRINKING ?
This bloody pandemic is turning everything upside down and the more I try to focus on other things than the COVID-19, update are everywhere so the goal do the best possible with the time while we continue on lockdown.
I starting this blog almost a decade ago and I haven't done much with it and I though this is the time to start putting some context down and clean up the old articles and start over again.
While level 4 restriction still on and us unable to buy wine yet I though lets think what we should be drinking should we still have some left and for those who don't start planning what to drink once all this is over.
Is mid-May, not quite winter yet so White Wine?
We often are judging things by appearance and that applies to wine, too!
As the summer begins, so does the vinous drumbeat: everyone scream white wine, white wine, white wine! Is cold. It’s refreshing. It may not perfectly match a huge steak off the grill…but man is it going to cool you down!.
In the winter, runs in the opposite direction: the scream is red wine, red wine, red wine! “This is winter-weight wine,” here we go again, we don't want to drink white wine because is to cold.
Who say all whites’ wines must drink ice cold?
Some of winter’s best and most typical foods go better with white wine than they do with red wine! Remain color-blind–or color-flexible–and your gastronomic life in the seasons will be improved.
South Africa is producing some of the most amazing white wines in the world, do yourself and without mention any names producer and rather styles, Swartland or Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc, Franschoek Semillon, Constantia or Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin Riesling and Chardonnay, Walker Bay Chardonnay just to name few.
Soup is always tricky to match with wine, both liquid but a like a clear consommé my choice will be a dry Sherry or a white port, (Peter Bayly make a nice one out of Chenin Blanc) if it is thicker and creamy a old Chardonnay will do just fine.
Other good crazy pairing unusual for most of the people will be winter vegetables with Roussane, Viognier or Crispy roast Chicken, duck or pork with dry Riesling or Semillon, is a fact that acidity cut the fat on the dishes and work well.
Wine is fun and is not always rules when came to pairing, the fun part is experiment with different flavours
Stay safe everyone !!
Chao.
